The maiden edition of the SDG Hangout, a collaborative effort between Tarragon Edge Consult and the Africa Institute of Sanitation and Waste Management (AISWAM), gathered dreamers, doers, and changemakers under one roof to explore a profound truth — Water is Life.

Held under the theme “Advancing SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation,” the event went beyond a typical dialogue; it was an immersive experience of insight, inspiration, and action.

From the soothing melodies of Ken Carbonou to the buzz of introductions and the writing of personal Pledges for Impact, the atmosphere was alive with purpose and anticipation.

Dr. Genevieve Pearl Duncan set the tone for the evening with an opening message that linked the dialogue to a broader vision of “building communities and organisations that don’t just talk sustainability but live it.” Her heartfelt plea to “lead for impact, not applause” resonated strongly throughout the room.

The highlight of the evening was a thought-provoking dialogue featuring distinguished voices across sectors. Barry Kofi King (WaterAid Ghana), Victoria Naa Shika Quaye (CEO, Naaviq Limited), Dr. Akorfa Ahiafo (Sustainability Advocate and CEO, Dekosey), and the South African High Commissioner, H.E. Thando Dalamba. Their discussions illuminated how leadership, innovation, and policy can drive water and sanitation solutions that create lasting legacies.

In his powerful remarks, H.E. Thando Dalamba emphasised Africa’s shared destiny, stating, “Sustainable Development Goals should remind us that our destinies are intertwined. Clean water in Ghana, green energy in South Africa, or quality education anywhere on the continent are not isolated ambitions but a collective priority for Africa’s sustainable future.”

The event was graced by a host of dignitaries, including Madam Dora Yeboah (Coordinating Executive, CAS Cluster – Jospong Group), Mr. Klaus Von Backustein (Managing Director, Ignite Media Group – Jospong Group), Dr. Victor Abbey, traditional leaders such as Naa Afokor Odjeagbo II, Naa Momo Meniefeebo II, Naa Fofo Anum II, Naa Korklu Mobonalor III, Ɔte Atuoso Nana Osei Bonsu III, and Mr. Franklin Sowa, Director of Marketing at Graphic Communications Group, among others.

Corporate partner Jospong Group and other distinguished guests enriched the evening with compelling impact stories that showed sustainability is not a mere buzzword but a shared responsibility.

commitment to advancing a cleaner, fairer, and more sustainable world.

The evening reached its pinnacle with the launch of the “Lead for Legacy” Campaign, a movement that calls on leaders, both young and seasoned, to rise above rhetoric and build lasting change. In Dr. Genevieve’s words, “Legacy is not what we leave behind, but what we build while we are here. This is our moment to lead, and to lead for legacy.”

The session ended with laughter, networking, and photo moments at the SDG Brand Wall, capturing the spirit of collaboration and hope that defined the day. Each smile, handshake, and pledge told a story of shared responsibility, proof that small conversations can indeed spark big impact.

As the curtains closed on this first edition, one thing was certain: the SDG Hangout is not just another event; it is a rhythm, a community, and a growing movement. With its promise to return monthly, it will continue to keep the flame of sustainable leadership burning brightly.

The Lead for Legacy Campaign now extends beyond the venue, into offices, campuses, communities, and hearts, inspiring a new generation of leaders to act boldly, think sustainably, and leave a lasting mark on society.

Among the 100 iconic African Leaders who were called to the Legendary African Leaders Hall of Fame on July 20, 2023, were distinguished individuals such as Hon Dr. Henry Kwabena Kokofu – Esq, Chairman General Kwami Sefa-kayi, Dr. Genevieve Duncan Obuobi, Dr. John A. Kumah, Dr. Victor Abbey, Nii Amankra-Tetteh, Julian Opuni, Dr. Stella Agyenim-Boateng, Farouk Khailann, Dr. Dominic Oduro, and many other notable Ghanaians.

The esteemed event, organized by The New Africa Magazine, aimed to celebrate outstanding African icons from various fields. The event commenced with insightful panel discussions on a range of topics at the luxurious Alisa Hotel on July 19, and wrapped with a Gala night and Hall of Fame.

In a thought-provoking speech at the recent event, Dr. Genevieve passionately addressed the audience on the critical aspects that hold the key to shaping the future of Africa. With a special emphasis on women-led businesses and the youth, Dr. Genevieve shed light on the transformative power of collaboration and the vital role of knowledge seeking in propelling the continent towards prosperity and progress.

The Power of Collaboration

Dr. Genevieve’s first call to action centered around breaking down the barriers of competition and embracing collaboration, especially for women in business. She advocated for a collective effort, where successful individuals and enterprises come together to uplift and support each other. Collaboration, she argued, has the potential to amplify the impact of every business, fostering an environment of shared growth and success.

In a continent as diverse as Africa, collaboration is not merely an option; it is a necessity. By transcending geographical, cultural, and sectoral boundaries, businesses and individuals can share resources, knowledge, and expertise, ultimately leading to innovative solutions to some of the most pressing challenges. Collaboration also empowers marginalized voices, giving women-led businesses and the youth a stronger foothold in the market and society.

From Competition to Collaboration

Dr. Genevieve urged women entrepreneurs to shift their perspective from viewing each other as competitors to seeing one another as allies in a larger mission. By replacing competition with collaboration, women can collectively harness their talents and experiences to create a more inclusive and empowering entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Knowledge: The Key to Empowerment

The second crucial point in this panel discussion raised by Dr. Genevieve emphasized the significance of knowledge seeking. The dynamic nature of the world demands constant learning, and the African youth must actively seek knowledge to equip themselves with the skills necessary to thrive in a rapidly changing landscape.

Dr. Genevieve lamented the underwhelming attendance of the event’s knowledge-sharing sessions, contrasting it with the expected influx of attendees for the gala night. She urged the young audience to reverse this trend and prioritize knowledge-seeking activities over fleeting entertainment. With the internet offering an abundance of educational resources, access to knowledge has never been easier. Dr. Genevieve encouraged the youth to leverage this opportunity to their advantage.

Empowering African Youth Through Knowledge

Knowledge empowers the youth to challenge conventional wisdom, innovate, and create new possibilities for Africa’s future. By equipping themselves with diverse knowledge and skills, young people can become the driving force behind the continent’s growth and development. Moreover, knowledge fosters critical thinking, encouraging young minds to question existing norms and envision a more sustainable and inclusive Africa.

A Call to Action

Dr. Genevieve’s speech resonates as a call to action for all Africans, especially women entrepreneurs and the youth. Embracing collaboration and actively seeking knowledge can become the catalysts that drive Africa towards becoming a beacon of progress and prosperity.

As a continent blessed with vast resources, diverse cultures, and dynamic young minds, Africa has the potential to unleash its true potential through unity, cooperation, and an insatiable thirst for knowledge. By supporting each other and investing in education and personal growth, Africans can collectively take charge of their destiny and build a brighter future for generations to come.

“Let us heed Dr. Genevieve’s inspiring words and embark on a journey of collaboration and knowledge-seeking, transforming Africa into a continent that is not only celebrated for its wealth of resources but also for its resilient, innovative, and empowered people. Together, we can make a lasting impact and shape a future that is nothing short of extraordinary.”

WISE Network Ghana has organized a day’s forum and exhibition for young female business owners in the Accra metropolis to mark this year’s Global Entrepreneurship Week.

The event was held at Tarragon Edge SMEs ecosystem (T-Edge Hub) which provides a growth-oriented platform for knowledge, capacity building and resource sharing exclusively for SMEs, consultants and investors.

The well-attended event dubbed ‘Women Entrepreneurs Forum and Exhibition’ was held under the auspices of Upshift Global; Club G100, Financial Inclusion Africa and Genevieve Pearl Consult.

Two leading Ghanaian experts in business management who spoke at the event advised young entrepreneurs that the survival of their businesses is hinged on bookkeeping and record analysis.

According to them, bookkeeping which is keeping accurate financial records could be used to gauge the health of the businesses.

Dr Akorfa Ahiafor, the MD/CEO of Jireh Microfinance Limited, described bookkeeping as the difference between success and failure of businesses.

She added that bookkeeping helps businesses to plan their budgets, explaining that budgets are vital for businesses as they are the financial guidelines to success.

“With bookkeeping, you can assess your financial resources and manage income and expenses”, Dr Ahiafor stated.

“So we entrepreneurs fail to keep records of businesses, we will fail. It is not enough to keep records but to analyse the records as well”.

Hajia Amina Sammo, a leading Financial Literacy Consultant, added that bookkeeping makes filing a tax return easier for businesses that practice bookkeeping.

With a proper organization of records on your earnings, expenditure and others you won’t have to worry about scrambling for receipts and invoices because all your records are properly documented, she explained.

“Organization of financial records is very important. You should be able to easily assess your financial information at anytime”.

This will help when it comes to applying for grants, loans, or even attracting investors”, Hajia Sammo said.

Looking at the importance role bookkeeping and record analysis plays in the survival of businesses, the two experts encouraged the young female entrepreneurs not to be ashamed of sending their business figures to individuals and institutions to analyse for them.

Addressing the exhibitors, the President of WISE Network Ghana, Dr Genevieve Obuobi Duncan, said: “It is important for us to support businesses so that they can scale up and be sustainable”.

The exhibitors expressed their appreciation to WISE Network Ghana and its sponsors for providing the platform for them to showcase their products.
